NiMe

The NiMe™ (Non-industrialized Microbiome Restore) Diet is a high-fibre, whole-plant-focused eating pattern designed to reduce the risk of chronic disease by restoring gut microbiome features disrupted by the industrialization of food.

It emulates key characteristics of traditional diets in non-industrialized societies, where chronic diseases are uncommon and microbiomes exhibit a diverse range of beneficial metabolic functions.

The NiMe™ Diet is perfect if you want to:

Improve your health markers → lower cholesterol, balance blood sugar, reduce inflammation
Strengthen your gut → support a thriving, healthy microbiome

Demand strong science → follow a diet clinically proven diet, not another fad

Manage your weight naturally → protect long-term health without restrictions or gimmicks

Save time → enjoy ready-to-eat meals that fit into busy lives

Dr. Anissa Armet PhD, RD
Anissa Armet is a registered dietitian, and currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Alberta. Anissa has followed the principles of the NiMe diet for almost a decade to help manage her inflammatory bowel disease. She hopes that the NiMe diet will help others transform their health as well! In 2017, Anissa created the recipes of the NiMe diet and contributed to the design of the controlled feeding trial as an undergraduate student. During her PhD (2019-2024, supervised by Prof. Jens Walter), Anissa was responsible for participant recruitment and data collection, cooking the NiMe diet and data analysis.

Professor Jens Walter Dr. rer. nat.
Jens Walter is a Professor of Ecology, Food, and the Microbiome at University College Cork and the APC Microbiome Ireland. From 2014 to 2019, Jens served as the Professor and Campus Alberta Innovates Program Chair at the University of Alberta, where he was the lead investigator of the scientific study on the NiMe diet. He was the first to study the gut microbiome in rural Papua New Guineans, on which the NiMe diet is based. Jens has >200 peer-reviewed publications and is a ‘Highly Cited Researcher’ according to Clarivate. Jens will be the first to admit that he violated virtually every single principle of the NiMe diet in his younger years. After he got away with it as a young adult, the combination of a sport injury with bad diet contributed to substantial weight gain in the past. Following the principles of the NiMe diet has helped keep the kilos off, and Jens hopes that the information on this page will help others to live healthier lives!
Why did NiMe™ choose GourmetFuel

The NiMe diet is inspired by the traditional food practices of traditional, non-industrialized communities, whose long-standing knowledge of resilient and diverse food systems has informed scientific understanding of nutrition. We gratefully acknowledge this inspiration while emphasizing that the NiMe diet is a modern, science-based adaptation and not a reproduction of any traditional diet. The scientists behind NiMe are contributing in a non-profit capacity. We recognize and respect the cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples and their vital contributions to global food knowledge.
