Are You Drinking Too Much Water?

Posted by Emma Buckley | 11th Jul 2019

Water really is the key to a healthy body. Being fully hydrated should be your daily goal, so we need to drink water. Our bodies are two-thirds water. Our blood is 90% water and our muscles are over 70% water. The functioning of all our cells and organs depends on adequate hydration. When we are fully hydrated our whole body works like a well-oiled engine.

How Much Do We Need?

Water is essential to our optimum health and the simple fact is that most of us don’t drink enough. We need toreplace the 1.5 litres we lose every daythrough breathing, sweating and going to the bathroom. Therefore on average we should be drinking 2 litres of fresh, clean, pure water everyday, or25-35ml per kg body weight.

A Note On Too Much Water

Yes, you can drink too much, especially if you’re losing precious electrolytes and not restoring the balance. It is these electrolytes, sodium, magnesium and potassium that control the delicate balance of water inside and outside of our cells. We lose these salts through sweat so they must be replaced. If you have a heavy session and the weather is hot, bear in mind that you may sweat more than normal and so should replace these by adding some normal table salt to your water and by having a banana and some nuts.
