Movember

The stache is back! Men’s mental and physical health is important each month of the year however November dedicates itself to being the annual period where we focus on what factors are really affecting men’s health.
Movember began as a small initiative in 2003 organised by a group of friends aiming to raise money and awareness for men’s health issues locally. This has snowballed into a movement that is recognised across the globe and has millions of participants all over the world.
It is broken up into 4 main target areas that affect men such as suicide prevention, mental health, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. The cause aims to highlight these 4 key areas and work on ways to help men reduce the risk of suffering both physically and mentally.
Things you can do to aid the cause -
- Men talk about mental health significantly less than women. This November, make a point of reaching out to loved ones and friends to offer the space to listen attentively about their concerns.
- Try to get regular check ups with your GP to keep up to date on your physical health and also to get referred to a counsellor if you’re feeling low and need to speak with a professional.
- It may not be easy to motivate yourself but attempt to get in some form of exercise every day and invite pals for company if you’re finding it difficult to get out there on your own.
- Try to practice mindfulness and journal your thoughts. Our minds can be a scary place when we overthink. Writing down our thoughts and organising them may help make problems not seem as huge.
