With a Surge In Dairy-Free Diets, Should You be Drinking Milk?

Milk is a rich source of protein & calcium, a naturally delicious and nutritious ingredient and a vital part of a healthy, balanced diet. While we shouldn’t shake our heads at calcium as the key to growth, development and maintenance of our bones, there is so much more to milk than calcium.

This is something we all know and hear repeatedly but why else should we consume milk? The surge of dairy free diets begs the question with many –Should you drink milk?

  • PROTEIN – Your body has over 600 muscles, all playing significant roles in your body’s movement and support. Protein supports this movement, growth and maintenance. Consuming protein regularly ensures you have the adequate supply. Milk is a ‘complete’ protein, meaning it contains all of the essential amino acids (building blocks of protein) that our bodies require.
  • IODINE – Your cognitive brain function relies on Iodine. This includes memory, attention span and perceptions. Irish milk is considered an excellent source of iodine and milk is one of the main food sources of this mineral in the Irish diet.
  • PHOSPHORUS – It’s not all about calcium when it comes to bones. Phosphorus is a key nutrient for bone and teeth health. Our skeleton frames our body, providing essential structural, movement and protection for our organs.
  • POTASSIUM – You may not know but this mineral plays a role in normal blood pressure maintenance and is found in significant quantities in milk. Definitely a factor to consider.
  • B VITAMINS – Your body need energy and milk holds the key to reducing tiredness and fatigue. Rich in vitamin B2, B5 and B12 no wonder this is natures very own energy drink!
  • CALCIUM – Health authorities state you should be able to get all the calcium you need by eating a varied and balanced diet.

Another fascinating nutritional aspect of milk is the new emerging concept of ‘milk matrix’. Current research is exploring how nutrients found within milk and other dairy foods are more effective then when found singly. Working together in synergy to boost your health!

Milk does not agree me?

When you drink milk or consume any dairy products, it can cause a reaction, discomfort or break-outs when 2 conditions are concerned –

Lactose Intolerance is a common digestive problem where the body is unable to digest lactose. Lactose is a type of sugar found in milk and dairy products. Lactose intolerance can cause symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort and diarrhoea, but it does not cause severe reactions.

Cows’ milk allergy (CMA)is one of the most common childhood food allergies. It usually develops when cows’ milk is first introduced into your baby’s diet either in formula or when your baby starts eating solids. More rarely it occurs when breastfeeding and cows’ milk from the mother’s diet passing to the baby.

As with all food allergies and intolerances, if you think you or your baby have a milk allergy or intolerance, make an appointment to talk to your GP or other health professional, before self-diagnosing.

What if I am intolerant or allergic?
