Gestational Diabetes

What is gestational diabetes?
Gestational diabetes is a common health issue that is characterised by the body’s inability to produce enough insulin during pregnancy which leads to elevated blood sugar levels. While this usually resolves after pregnancy it is important to manage it while pregnant for the health of both mum and baby.
Nutrition plays a key role in controlling blood sugars in gestational diabetes and encourages a healthy pregnancy.
Here are some key dietary tips to optimise nutritional intake and blood glucose control during pregnancy -
- Balanced meals - Choose well balanced meals that include a complex carbohydrate such as wholegrain or basmati rice, whole grain bread, or wholemeal pasta. Try to incorporate lean proteins such as chicken, turkey, or eggs. Fish is also a great source of healthy fat or alternatively include sources such as olive oil, avocado and dairy products. These balanced meals will help stabilise blood sugar levels in the body.
- Regular meals - It is important to keep a consistent meal pattern throughout the day. Skipping meals for long periods or fasting is not optimal for blood glucose control. Aim for three meals and three snacks every day packed with nutrition.
- Limit sugary snacks and drinks - Avoid regular fizzy beverages as they are high in sugar and can cause spikes in blood sugar levels. Try opting for sparkling water with no added sugar juice sweetener. Similarly, it is important to limit the intake of processed foods and high-refined carbohydrates.
- Choose wholegrains where possible - Wholegrains such as quinoa, brown rice, cereals, and wholegrain breads release glucose more gradually which helps maintain blood glucose levels within normal ranges.
- Portion carbohydrates - Aim for 20-30 grams of carbohydrate at breakfast, 45-60 grams with lunch and dinner, and finally aim for 10-15 grams of carbohydrate within snacks.
- Incorporating physical activity - Regular physical activity can help our bodies regulate our blood sugar levels during gestational diabetes. Aim to incorporate 30-60 minutes of physical activity per day.
- Consult with Healthcare Professionals - The nutritional requirements of every woman may be different, and expert guidance can guarantee the best results for mother and child. Therefore, it is important to keep in touch with your medical team - obstetrician, nurses, and registered dietitian to optimise your care.
