How to Avoid the Christmas Weight Gain
We all know that December brings Christmas parties, family gatherings, excessive drinking and other social events to fill our calendars. It’s a great time for having fun and catching up with friends, but unfortunately, it’s usually not a great time for that number on the scales.
While you might think you’ll lose those festive kilos as soon as the silly season is over, the majority of people struggle to lose their Christmas weight. The good news is that staying healthy over Christmas is no easy task, but it is possible. Here is How to Avoid the Christmas Weight Gain.
How to Avoid the Christmas Weight Gain
Understand that “breaking even” on your weight during Christmas… is a big win!
Christmas is a time when most people gain a few kilos so, if you are able to maintain your weight and exercise routine during this time, give yourself a big pat on the back! Seriously, this is a big win in anyone’s book. If you implement some of my tips, you’ll be able to achieve this and still enjoy the festive fun.
Watch Your Alcohol Intake
- Limit how much alcohol you drink to 1-2 standard drinks a day (zero is even better!). Watch your serving sizes.
- Never top up your glass. Finish one glass before starting another. Otherwise, this is how a glass can turn into a bottle.
- Restaurants often serve wine in glasses that are much bigger than the standard serve. Try to drink a glass of water in between each drink.
Watch those Portion Sizes
Keep an eye on your portion sizes and the number of servings you have. Try using a smaller plate instead of a dinner plate. In addition, if you have had a big lunch go easy on portions at dinner. Before you go back for seconds wait 20 minutes to see if you are even still hungry!
Keep Moving
The gym doesn’t have to be your only source of exercise over Christmas (unless you really love going); instead, make activity fun.
Go out with the family for a walk, do a quick 15-minute online workout, go for a swim (if you are brave enough). The exercise won’t just burn calories, it will help to reduce stress, too.
Treat Yourself but Don’t Stuff Yourself
Eat a bit of whatever you fancy, but if your reply to the offer of another canape is, “I’ll force one down!” it’s probably time to stop. Overeating can make you feel sluggish and lethargic, and play havoc with your digestive system. If you’re struggling to choose between all the treats on offer, prioritise the foods that are only available at this time of year.
Fill Up on the Veggies
Having a good helping of vegetables with your meal will add vitamins, minerals and fibre and help you towards your five a day, but beware of vegetables that come with added butter, cheese, cream or salt. If you are at a restaurant, ask your waitress for more information and see if there are any healthier alternatives.
