It's Almost Halloween!

As Halloween is approaching, it is important to remember to enjoy the time with your family. Many parents may feel a sense of worry at the thought of their children being surrounded by lots of high-sugar foods. Why not try to include some healthy balanced meals throughout the day, prior to heading out trick or treating?
You can make the meals Halloween-themed and get everyone involved. Here are some ideas you may like to try!
Homemade Burger
Using lean mince, prepare some burger patties. You can add a spooky twist by cutting out eyes on the wholemeal burger bun and cutting the cheese to make them appear like teeth. Make sure to add salad to your burger or some vegetables on the side.
Homemade Pizza
You can prepare the dough and let everyone decorate their own pizza. There are plenty of ways to make the pizza Halloween-themed. Why not try using Halloween shape cutters? You could cut your mozzarella in ghost shapes and place it on the pizza or add legs around the pepperoni using red peppers or olives to appear like spiders.
Homemade Spaghetti Bolognese
To make the Spaghetti Bolognese, boil some brown spaghetti, use lean mince to prepare the meatballs, and add homemade tomato sauce and lots of veggies. To make it suitable for Halloween, try adding some mozzarella and olives on top of your meatballs to give the appearance of eyeballs.
Stuffed Red Peppers
Carve out your red pepper as you would a pumpkin and add a lean protein source such as chicken or beans, a fibre-rich carbohydrate such as brown rice, along with some vegetables. Cook in the oven until the peppers soften.
Boonanas
Half your banana and add raisins or chocolate chips for the eyes. If you like, you can place them in orange juice and roll them in desiccated coconut.
Mandarin Pumpkins
Try adding a piece of celery into the middle of your peeled orange to make it look like a pumpkin!
You can find the above recipes and lots more online. By getting the kids involved they tend to enjoy the meals more. Try to get creative in the kitchen, relax, and enjoy the time together as a family.
Getting active through Halloween games is a great way to use up some of their energy and can be another way of spending time together and creating traditions this Halloween.
