Eating well is good for your mental as well as your physical health. But which foods are particularly important to keep the grey matter in your brain happy and healthy?
We have put together some foods that have been shown to positively boost your brain health once consumed regularly!
Check them out below:
Fatty Fish
Healthy fats help the brain function more efficiently. They are characterised as omega-3 fatty acids. These brain boosting fats are typically found in salmon, herring, mackerel, and sardines. So, including fish at least twice a week in your diet is a good step forward for brain health!
Blueberries
Blueberries contain the same protective compounds called anthocyanins. These help to improve memory, reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases and protect the neurons in your aging nervous system.
If blueberries aren’t a readily available option for you, or something you don’t enjoy, you can also achieve the same effect with other dark red and purple fruits, like blackberries, and veg, like red cabbage.
Turmeric/Curcumin
Curcumin is widely consumed in Asia either as turmeric directly or as one of the culinary ingredients in food recipes.
Curcumin has got its global recognition because of its strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and antimicrobial activities. The benefits have been widely reported in many neurological diseases. Recently, there is growing attention on usage of curcumin to prevent or delay the onset of neurodegenerative diseases.
Broccoli
Broccoli is rich in compounds called glucosinolates. When broken down in the body, they may help to reduce oxidative stress and lower the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
Nuts
Consuming nuts on a regular basis is good for your brain. Nut consumption is linked to better cognitive function, reduced risk of depression, better mood, and enhanced memory, learning and attention capacity.
Walnuts are considered the top nut for brain health.
They have a significantly high concentration of DHA, a type of Omega-3 fatty acid. Some researchers suggest that DHA may be the key to boosting your brain's performance and preventing age-related cognitive decline
Coffee- now we’re talking!
