Is ‘Diet’ a Dirty Word?

Is ‘Diet’ a Dirty Word?

Is ‘Diet’ a Dirty Word?

Diet has now developed this almost negative connotation in the nutrition and health industry. A dirty word. It has lost its original meaning: Diet – The kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats. To the more socially accepted – A special course of food to which a person restricts themselves, either to lose weight or for medical reasons.
International No Diet Day is an annual celebration of body acceptance, including body shape diversity. This day is also focused on promoting a healthy lifestyle and raising awareness of the potential dangers of extreme fad dieting and their inevitable failure. International No Diet Day was created by Mary Evans Young in 1992 after her negative experience with dieting and body image. This day falls on May 6th every year.

Some foolish failures of radical fad diets were explored in our blog Don’t be an April ‘fad-diet’ Fool! GourmetFuel focus on well balanced diets and achieving your goals with your health in mind. With the support of AFN Registered Nutritionists on staff, you know the advice you are getting is best practice. Although many of us feel we have some weight to lose, it’s important to always remember this is your one and only body. It’s all about being the healthiest you can be, loving the skin you are in and embracing what your body can do. Your healthy eating should not be seen as a ‘Diet’, but more a way of life, a lifestyle change that is going to benefit your quality of life. Fuelling your body to continue to make you who you are. What we do know is that it is best to nourish your body with a balanced diet, getting the sufficient energy and nutrients needed. Food has a function but one of the most important purposes is to impart joy when eating. Achieving a calorie deficit in a safe, controlled manor is the tried and tested method in achieving, maintaining and enjoying your weight loss.

With a large amount of negativity pushed out on social media themed with the film, fashion, and cosmetic industries working hard to make us feel unacceptable and needing improvement pushing unrealistic standards with filters and photoshop, it’s hard to focus our thoughts on the positives. International No Diet Day is about embracing yourself, highlighting size-ism and discrimination, emphasising the inefficacy of commercial diets and at the end of it all enjoying your meals without the constrictions of changing who you are. Here at GourmetFuel we focus on nourishing your body with the energy it needs, not too much or too little, seeing the results you want but essentially feeling great in your own skin. Offering sound advice with evidence-based methods in place, but enjoying the food you are eating and the body you have.
